Never thought I’d write this kind of post.

Disclaimer: Boys read at own risk as post contains excessive fan girling

I never thought I would write this post on my blog, honestly was avoiding plus was out of my comfort zone a bit to talk about.

But recently I had gone on a binge watching fest of my first Yaoi anime I’d ever seen, never finished the third season of it so decided to re watch it. Hence why we are here now as this post will be a reflection of my re-watch and never understanding of why females are attracted to the Yaoi genre.

Junjou Romantica is about three guy couples, Akihiko a writer falls for young Misaki where they end up living together, Hiroki who had feelings for Childhood friend Akihiko meets Nowaki and Miyagi a recent divorcee has to deal with his wife’s brother Shinbou crushing on him.

Lita is like those other fangirls?? haha why yes I am, I was good at hiding it and never talked about it much but coming out like this is totally out of my comfort zone. What possessed me to watch a show like this?? That is really hard to explain, it had been years since I had seen the show. It was a case of randomly stumbling upon this series in my early days of watching anime, my first initial reaction was “Why don’t I press the pause button”? but before I knew it Junjo had me in my clutches. It wasn’t till I met others on the inter webs that like this genre, where I felt more opened to it all and in this day and age, I know way more fan girls now.

I totally understand for people that do not like this genre at all, boy kissing and so forth. But in no way easily assumed you’ll see sexual graphic parts, this yaoi is what I consider mildest of mild, I just wanted to clarify that, this does not contain the hardcore stuff, your probably picturing in your head now. You can ask any other fan girl who seen this show and they will clarify, just is a pet peeve of mine that, people assume stuff instantly.

So Why Is This Show So Loved Among Yaoi Fans?

Yaoi fans I’ve met in the past, most of them said Junjo was their first introduction into the genre, to my surprise. I would recommend this to anyone who secretly wants to check out this genre, Junjo Romantica is your perfect introduction. To answer the question at hand why this show is loved a lot is the focus put into the challenges the couples each face and represented theme of gay equality.

Misaki, Miyagi and Hiroki were the most unsure of their feelings towards their forwarded confessors, they made remarks such as “But I’m a guy, your a guy”  and age difference. It’s really enjoyable to watch these guys open up more and be honest with their feelings, they have persistent ones after them though, that puts Misaki, Miyagi and Hiroki under some pressure. While my re-watch made me think about how anyone feels the hesitant to be honest their feelings, whether gay or straight. I support gay equality and you cannot help or should deny who you love, it’s better to give into those feelings and be honest is my take on this.

During my re-watch of the first two seasons are the most enjoyable of the hurdles every couple faces, to finally get to their happy place. The third season I still enjoyed but is not my favorite, as you don’t see much of the other couples, which annoyed me. Likely for fans Misaki and Usami’s pairing steals the whole show over the other couples, as most of the focus is on them.

These two had it rough but Misaki had it the roughest of all the characters, dealing with Usami’s possessive personality and his difficult family. Faced with disapproval most of the time especially Usami’s father, who did not think Misaki was right for his son. Misaki was such adorable character, from his awkwardness of Usami’s affections, I felt sorry for him as he was a lost little lamb, of how he should respond to Usami’s feelings. Usami’s random pounces on Misaki didn’t help towards Misaki’s conclusion of his feelings, just rattled his mind even more. I can’t lie that I felt sorry for Misaki but the guy could have walked away from it all, Usami for my liking was a bit too forward at times. The progress of their relationship throughout three seasons was paced out well for my liking.

I’m going to take a me moment now and talk about my favorite coupling Hiroki and Nowaki, they’re names rhyme. It was disappointing in season three they only had one episode about them, lame but first two seasons, over a span of 4 episodes, I found my first Yaoi pairing. Hiroki was the most emotional out of all the series pairings, nothing wrong with seeing a man cry you know. He was someone that could be strung along very easily and not speak up of his feelings, meeting Nowaki slowly began to change this. Nowaki’s persistence for Hiroki is frankly adorable, Fiercely Hiroki rejects his affections at first but the pressures of being chased after win always.

Hiroki apart from being very emotional, was very negative as well, thinking Nowaki will just get bored of him quickly. It sounds weird to say this reminds me of myself a lot, scary >.< haha. Nowaki’s makes his feelings clear to Hiroki in the end and demonstrates the words of the one you love can make any doubts fade away.

Miyagi and Shinobu are the true hopeless ones out of the pairings, childish Shinobu crushing on unsure Miyagi about the idea of being with him. At times Miyagi’s fake doting towards Shinobu I found cruel in the beginning, but persistent Shinobu demonstrates will put up with anything for who we love. Not all of the situations that occur in the series are not realistic but Miyagi’s was strange, getting over an old love for his teacher, then faced with Shinobu rail road. Though Shinobou would irritate anyone, he helped Miyagi from staying in the past and move forward. You can never find an explanation of how others influence and make you realize things, you cannot see. It’s one of those magical factors of when it comes to love.

Those facial expressions oh god.

Another reason yaoi fans enjoy this series is the sneaked comedy elements. The humor to Junjo is god dam amusing and has me losing it every time. The facial expressions from the characters make you want to cack it, the prime humor time is when there is a misunderstanding or assumptions between the couples. Haha there is a lot of finger pointing if someone is interested in a woman instead or their plain jealous. The sheer ridiculous thoughts that race through these men, they act like how a women is losing her mind over a guy.

I admire a lot Studio DeenThey’ve done some favorite anime of mine such as Hiiro no Kakeru, Kyo Kara Maoh, but Junjo will be a long running favorite by them, they know boys love. Junjo Romantica is not going to everyone’s cup of tea and honestly… who cares :). After re visiting this series this month, made me only realize how much I’ve missed this genre and the way it makes my inner fan girl burst out. I highly recommend this series to secret lovers of the yaoi genre, it has the sweet boy love factor big time. !!

I hope whoever reads this daring post enjoying hearing my thoughts. Haha almost forgot to mention, to my surprise Junjo the first season has been released on bluray and DVD here in Australia this month. I know what I’ll be getting this Christmas for sure !!!

An dream I never thought would come true *cries in the corner*

I”ll see you all in the next post 😀

  1. lovely post and it is so wonderful to see more anibloggers talking about yaoi, if you can track it down I highly recommend Gravitation (just stay clear of the dub) which was my introduction to the genre, though I think this season’s Yuri on Ice may be the birth of many new yaoi fans

  2. I’d struggle to recommend this to anyone, mostly because of episode 1 of season 1 (that is a bit confronting and awkward to watch particularly if you’re not sure what to expect). While I actually really enjoy this series and have watched it many times I always hesitate before that first episode. It’s really hard to believe that Usami and Misaki end up in an actual relationship after that sort of first encounter. Putting the disclaimer that “It get’s better” doesn’t make it sit any better that I just recommend someone go and watch a situation like that one partiuclarly with the age difference and power imbalance (he’s meant to be tutuoring him). Actually, that episode kind of highlights some of the issues with Yaoi in general.

  3. Aww Lita got a soft introduction, how cute!
My yaoi awakening was a random YouTube video of either AI no Kusabi or Papa to Kiss in the Dark, which both have sex, it was a super rude awakening lmao xD
Hiroki and Nowaki best baes, I think Sekaiichi or Love Stage are better introductions, specially because Junjou first season is a bit if a miss in terms of quality :’D
Tho do stay away from the manga, since there’s a lot of forced sexual intercourses between Usagi and Misaki
Shounen-ai is a good introduction, I know Kuroshitsuji birthed many BL fans, as is Yuri now doing ohohohi

  4. I’ve been curious about getting into boys love and yaoi properly for a little while. Like Cat said, I love those elements in Black Butler and Yuri on Ice, so it seems like something I would enjoy. My sister has watched this show and she really liked it, so I should probably give it a go. From the sounds of it I could see Hiroki and Nowaki being my favourite couple, Hiroki sounds a little like me too.

Thanks for this, I wasn’t sure about watching Junjou because I had almost no idea what to expect. But now I know it’s a gentle way into yaoi, I’m more likely to try it for myself.
